Lewycka 選擇了用黑色幽默來說這個故事。當英國人仍然對東歐移民潮感到錯愕，Lewycka 仔細寫下了移民族群的眾生相。由一群採摘士多啤梨的勞工開始，她寫下他們的日記、夢想、腳臭、爭鬧、性幻想。人在異鄉兼環境艱苦，小小的悲喜，各人腦裏的白日夢，令人物性格鮮明活現。
故事一路推演，這群小工分道揚鑣。宰雞場、餐廳、妓寨……一次又一次的遷徙被賣，輪得到他們做的，往往只有最惡劣的工作。這群卡在底層的小工，在莫名其妙的情況下，不斷被拿著「mobile-fon」的人轉賣圖利。反全球化民間鬥士，行為又乏力荒誕。堅守信念的主角，有沒有機會實現最初出國的希望與夢想？
