Sessa si concentra sul materiale suonato da Dolphy - carta d'identità di ogni musicista in fin dei conti - con un approccio analitico molto ... (continue)
Claudio Sessa fugge l'agiografia e propone un'analisi critica serrata della carriera di Eric Dolphy. Il testo contiene di fatto poco di prettamente biografico. Sessa si concentra sul materiale suonato da Dolphy - carta d'identità di ogni musicista in fin dei conti - con un approccio analitico molto tecnico poco adatto ai novizi. L'autore propone così una rigorosa e sistematica vivisezione delle più importanti incisioni in studio di Dolphy e delle sue esibizioni dal vivo più significative. Sottolinea l'importanza delle sue collaborazioni straordinarie con Mingus e Coltrane e riprende i tanti musicisti che hanno attraversato la breve vita di Dolphy, tracciando un interessante mappa di affinità e ispirazioni. Il quadro finale è quello di un artista unico, in anticipo sui tempi e mai stanco di ricercare nuovi sviluppi per la sua concezione di jazz.
