If you are a comic-book fan, this is probably your best chance of liking Conan.
If you are a Conan fan, these is are possibly the best comic-book adaptations you'll find, those which defined the Golden Age of popularity for the Cimmerian and eventually spawned the Schwarzenegger movies.

If you are a comic-book fan, this is probably your best chance of liking Conan.
If you are a Conan fan, these is are possibly the best comic-book adaptations you'll find, those which defined the Golden Age of popularity for the Cimmerian and eventually spawned the Schwarzenegger movies.
However, if you are not interested in swords&sorcery classics, and you don't like comics, you should probably give this a miss.

I loved the original Clerks movie. Quintessentially Gen-X, brave, and terribly funny, the first film by Kevin Smith (and still his best one, in my opinion) was an unexpected breath of fresh air for teenagers in the 90s. What followed rarely reached the same level, but it maintained the spirit, the "fuck-all" attitude, the courage of the original. This volume is also very uneven in quality, and it will make no sense whatsoever if you don't know who characters like Dante or Jay & Silent Bob are; but if you are a View Askew aficionado, you should proudly display this on your comic shelf, and watch as Jay tries to tell Nazi jokes to Will Eisner and you can't help laughing your a$$ off.

The comedy of everyday life

This book sounds, looks, smells true, but it's also very funny and poignant.

This book sounds, looks, smells true, but it's also very funny and poignant.
This is not Yet Another Tale of Saddos a la Daniel Clowes, and it's not as crazy as your usual Charles Burns' follower. It's a very Gen-X tale of people struggling to live their own unique life as everyday new-yorkers, and it's sad and funny and crazy as real life is.
If you want to "do an indie book" because you're into Clowes, then you should read this first and understand that the bar is much, much higher.

A great adaptation for a great book

This is not just a transposition of one of Auster's most famous works in graphical form; it's a masterpiece on its own merit, interpreting the text in a very creative way, pushing the boundaries of sequential art.

Era il 1994, impazzavano gli X-Men e i fumetti erano tornati, negli USA, ad essere roba per nerd, "per bambini", dopo la fine della British Invasion di Alan Moore. Si tende a dimenticare il contesto in cui "Jar of Fools" venne pubblicato. Era il 1994, impazzavano gli X-Men e i fumetti erano tornati, negli USA, ad essere roba per nerd, "per bambini", dopo la fine della British Invasion di Alan Moore. Lutes coraggiosamente mise insieme un'opera che ignorava completamente il comic fandom, puntando ad "altezze letterarie" e ottenendo riconoscimenti da pubblicazioni mainstream come il New York Times e Wired. Jar of Fools non sara' all'altezza del successivo Berlin (capolavoro assoluto), ma e' sicuramente piu' significativo di chili e chili di porno ben disegnato (vedi Manara) o superomistiche fantasie adolescenziali realizzate per vendere giocattoli. E' una storia di persone che cercano a loro modo di sopravvivere nella desolata solitudine urbana, dove ognuno vive con un cuore infranto e una speranza nel cappello, spesso senza il coraggio per seguirla davvero. Il bianco&nero e' lineare, East-Coast, con influenze francesi, e la storia e', come dice Chris Ware, "like getting a slow motion punch in the face. There’s plenty of time to get out of the way, but something compels you to wait and find out of it’s actually going to hurt as much when it hits. And, of course, it does."
