Haunting, surreal and gripping

One of my best reads of the year: in Night Jasmin Man you follow the protagonist on his travel to the strange island of Peponi off the East African coast, as he goes in search of his missing daughter. One of my best reads of the year: in Night Jasmin Man you follow the protagonist on his travel to the strange island of Peponi off the East African coast, as he goes in search of his missing daughter. He rapidly becomes entangled in the strange anachronistic environment, and one gets the sense that Peponi is a place where time has strangely become dissociated with the world.
David Lambkin weaves symbolism so strongly through the text, that I was worried at one stage that the book will play out as a clichéed spiritual allegory -- but not at all. It sustains its surreal atmosphere until the end, and had me mulling the underlying meaning and connections for weeks after finishing the book.
Strongly recommended, especially if you have a taste for magical and surreal undertones in a contemporary setting.

A profound book

I found Steinbeck's most famous work deeply moving. As a South African, it also gave me a new perspective on the trap of poverty.
