The curious incident of the dog in the night-time is a fiction about an autistic boy, Christopher John Francis, who have a super logical brain. The story happened who Wellington, one of his neighbor's dog, was killed. He decided to solve the murder with his logic, just like what his favorite detective Sherlock Holmes did.
The book was worth to be a bestseller. I especially like the way the writer used to describe the whole story. The writer used the 1st person, Christopher, to write the story out. This technique not only can reflect the whole story, it also can reflect what the main character think. It uses the character's point of view to see the story. This technique is specially useful when the main character is a person that can hardly be understood, which is the case of Christopher.
On the front of the book, some comments said the novel is like the book The Catcher in the Rye. As I've also read that book, I would like to make a few comparison. The Catcher in the Rye have used the similar technique (1st person) to write the story. However, I have total different reaction towards the two book. For The curious incident of the dog in the night-time, I really love and understand t Christopher and have total empathy on him. But for The Catcher in the Rye, I hate Holden (main character in the book). I totally don't understand what the character is doing and thinking. I think he is just adding too much comments on the his experience and stopping me from enjoying the story.
This is what I feel when reading the story. They are just subjective comments. From an objective view, we can analysis why I had such feelings. Christopher is a logical person, who are very good at logics and maths. He lives with pattern and rules and unable to accept irrational things. I am a person similar to him, who are good at maths, who likes following rules and hate people violating rules. That's why I have so much empathy on him and understand him so much.
On the contrary, Holden is just the opposite of Christopher and me. He is a bad student, who is being kick out of school, who like violating rules and law, who have committed all dirty things in my eyes, who don't know what he's doing in his life. I really hate him when reading, and just want to finish the story as soon as possible.
From this example, we can see the pros and cons of the technique of using 1st person to write stories. It can let readers to understand the character more and make empathy to readers. But the character must be similar to the reader or at least the reader may not hate. Or else it may just make the reader suffer.
