Quirky

not the humour that makes me laugh (rare event) a collection of odd, original writing that has to be classified somehow... More than anything it made me wonder about the writers, would I like them in person if I were to meet them at a party, and would I find them humorous or just too odd?

The book's language was hard to get into at first but having to work to understand forced me to pace my reading and absorb it more deeply. Some passages are poetry in prose form, descriptions are bright, effortless and memorable snapshots. I have some reserve for some final scenes that are a bit too Hollywood for the rest of the mood, still, it is a wonderful read for anyone who loves,if not the horse world, the well honed craft of a gifted writer.

McEwan is one of my favorite writers but the comedic aspects in this book cheapens his great writing talent. Though I found the character in Solar unlikeable in his unbearable humanness, I could still admire the writing which is still amazing in its capacity for description of anyone's internal dialogue in its minute details. Still Professor Beard reminded me too much of Richler's Barney, yet much more unappealing and transparent in his self-serving path through life. My little affection towards his character and the predictable way the story ends made the last 50 pages an unsavored run to the finish.

Excellent book, but different from western literature and I cannot say exactly why. Is it because the characters show little passion? because of the frank, unexciting sex descriptions? Because of the double-spaced text lay out, or because it reminds me of Sartre and the period of depression I was going through when reading it? Nevertheless the book stays with you long after the last page is read.

In ogni caso il libro è scritto bene e con molta umanità, coprendo svariati aspetti e casi della medicina forensica che è interessantissima; spero che la Cattaneo scriva un libro più approfondito, con più dettagli e spandendo i personaggi che la circondano, perchè questo mi ha fatto venire appetito... sul soggetto!

I read the author's THE RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT which is pure poetry in prose form, but this was hard going, not only as it was read to me while cooking but the reader was also bored to death by the detailed descriptions of fire behavior in a specific situation. Not in the firefighting business the minutia collected about the historical fire described in the book is as dry as the grass burned in that occasion

It's hard to clearly understand the impact of Franzen's stories as it is to comprehend the marks our families leave on our lives. Both have a way to insinuate themselves under our skins, becoming part of us while never allowing a clear vision of their outlines, definitions and essences. A mixed batch of contrasting emotions and thoughts, nesting in and snaking out of our lives, inevitably making it more complex and richer whether we like it or not.
E'difficile capire subito l'impatto delle storie di Franzen così come è difficile capire l'impatto emotivo della propria famiglia sulla nostra vita. Entrambe hanno un modo di insinuarsi sotto pelle, di diventare parte di noi senza mai permetterci il distacco necessario per definirle, vederne i contorni, capirne le essenze. Entrambe sono un insieme di emozioni contrastanti, intrecci di fatti e pensieri che si annidano e snodano in infinite combinazioni che finiscono per arricchire la nostra vita, che lo vogliamo o no.

FRIVOLO, ADOLESCENZIALE, INUTILE

Lo volevo comprare per mio padre, che dice che l'arte moderna è "una fregatura che vogliono dargli" come se lui fosse nel gruppo di coloro che possono permettersi di comprarla. Dandogli un'occhiata veloce ho deciso di prenderlo per me, leggerlo e se andava bene prestarlo a papà. Dopo averlo letto non so proprio se sia il caso. Prima di tutto si rivolge a un pubblico che noè molto probabile che non conosca la maggior parte delle opere e degli artisti che menziona, per cui poche immagini avrebbero senz'altro aiutato il vero neofita a capire. Secondo, il tono goliardico e le battutine spiritose che all'inizio possono aiutare ad affrontare un tema che può intimidire, diventano pesanti e patetici quando consistentemente affollano la maggior parte del testo dei brevissimi capitoli che dovrebbero sintetizzare l'opera, l'intenzione, e la storia di come l'artista sia arrivato ad esprimerle in quel modo.
In finale uno si domanda cosa ha imparato dal libro, sui perchè ogni autore ha una sua validità per la storia dell'arte, e l'unica risposta che sono riuscita ad estrapolare è che a parte il fatto che l'arte vera è capace di trascendere la materialità dell'oggetto e trasmettere emozioni che possiamo provare o meno, più oltre non si va. Quindi rimandando il giudizio alla nostra capacità di percezione, riporta il lettore pari pari alp unto da cui è partito prima di acquistare il libro. Quindi tutto sommato uno spreco di conoscenza, carta e tempo.

It is a very good book to lay the fundations of the history of art. As it was written in the 50's a large part of contemporary art is missing but the author's perception and final chapter leaves the door open for what is to come, exposing quite well what were the first traces of the problems that are virulently ailing the art world now. Recommended to those who want to start somewhere to understand why art developed the way it did and the reasons why we find so difficult to appreciate some aspects of contemporary art.
