Big Oyster New York in the World By Mark Kurlansky
  • More for readers who are interested in New York history, rather than on oysters in general. Still, it's an educational read. I had been craving for oysters every time I land (it's my designated flight read)... which made me an oyster-freak-joke amongst my friends for a good quarter :)

Phantom: The Sword of Truth: Volume 10 By Terry Goodkind

Jo has this up for trade. Trade with Jo for this.

  • Desperately addicted to this

When non-Terry-Goodkind-readers browse through the blurb at the back of the book, it all seems a little too 'fantasy' and too dramatic. Was never a fantasy fan, still ain't. But this The Sword of Truth series has had me for 5 years now. It's all about the protagonists' struggle to understand the problems and how to deal with them by knowing one's strengths..blahblahblah. I know it sounds cheesy. But I'd honestly rather read this to be all excited over what's next in the plot... and hear the same mantra than I would if I read another boring self-help book.

I even resort to 'staggering' out my reads to last until the next book. I'm just holding out for the next release in September 2007. Not exaggerating on this underrated piece of work. The entire series, not just this book. :)

Kane and Abel By Jeffrey Archer
  • Good to read for the start and the middle portions (think 20-minute portions before sleeping for a month), but the ending was like... so bo-ring. You go to bed with a 'sigh, I can dream of a better ending'.

I'd say it's definitely worth reading if you've finally got your hands on it, or have some spare time. But it's seriously overhyped. It's interesting, a good fresh view at things... especially with the application of economic-views which I -loathe- but enjoy with this book.

If you like Malcolm Gladwell's books and articles, this is kindaf like an average column from him. Not the best, but not the worst. Still worth a peek.

Handbook of Management Consulting: The Contemporary Consultant, Insights from World Experts By Larry E. Greiner, Flemming Poulfelt
  • Not bad, but it's not a cover-to-cover read. Pick and choose from where your interest lies. Good essays from very distinguished writers. Relevant and insightful. We need more books like these NOT costing $80 per copy.

I thought it was about how to gather a healthy life perspective with the indecent working life of a 'consultant'. But I was foolish enough to overlook the fact that a 'consultant' in US refers more to those individuals who 'consult' to companies, not the usual impression we have in Asia of big consulting firms who work in TEAMS to face clients and have to deal with TEAM dynamics, etc. So, it's pretty IRRELEVANT for me. Kindaf cheesed off actually. A lot more on life's perspectives though, that chicken soup type. Totally makes me want to puke at times. Sorry, but it's my truthful take on this book.

Disgustingly true. It's a great guide for wannabe-consultants in their final year in university. I never really believed all these pay-through-your-noses career guide books... until I realised that my company interviews were really mapped out as stated in the book. Worse of all, I didn't finish reading the book in time and got all frazzled out during my final round of interviews. Then, I found the relevant section in the job. Damn it. Next time, read first. What is a guide book for anyway? Me idiot.
