Maybe I need to explain a few things first. Agrippa d'Aubigné is one of the main protestant dudes in France in the late 16th century: that's in the middle of the Wars of Religion, and consequently the period is marked by extreme violence between the Catholics (mainly the kings and their allies) and protestants, who are severely persecuted (think about the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre - thousands of protestants were slaughtered). In the middle of this mess, d'Aubigné (who fought in the wars on the protestant side) managed to write this 300 page epic about the protestant faith. In rhyme. In 16th century French.
Being originally a Catholic myself (which of course, means absolutely nothing at all), I felt rather shocked, and even guilty! Can you imagine, more than 400 years later! Of course, I feel guilty about almost everything (yesterday I felt guilty about not letting a cat pass in front of me, and almost apologized), so I speak for myself, I guess.
Anyway, so that's 300 pages filled with prophesies right out of the Bible, extreme bashing of the Catholic church, monks, kings, hypocrites and "mignons" (Henri II's palls - said to be more than just friends...). In the process, about a thousand different images of the Devil and Hell and extreme suffering are summoned. If you're in to writing heavy metal songs, this stuff is a great source for inspiration!
He sincerely believed that the End of Times was about to come, and that fervent, extreme spirit of despair, hope and rejoicing in the coming of the Lord, and the extreme hate that he portrays toward the corrupt Catholic world, make for good reading! How this guy actually got through the censorship at the time, is a mystery.
But even if it's very fascinating, it's so difficult... It's written in 16th century French, and it's loooong... very long. Then again, maybe, just maybe, if a read a bit out of it every day, I might finish it in a year or two...
