A menacing atmosphere permeates this book. I was pleasantly surprised by the descriptions of several historical events in Europe of the last century, as well as the author's musings on the continent's ultimate fate. Benioff alternates wry humour with gruesome descriptions of wartime atrocities. Once the book gets going it is hard to put down. Has some likeable characters with proper depth to them.
