First Footsteps in East Africa

Lo sto leggendo su Google Books, un'edizione del 1896 o giu' di li.
Non ne fanno piu', come Burton. Il quale gia' ai suoi tempi era speciale: esploratore, letterato, avventuriero, erudito, femminaro - fra marinai adeni, pastori somali, sceicchi harari, pulci a non finire, e cammelli of course. - — Apr 12, 2011 | Add your feedback

Space Opera! -
Pensavo che fosse passata di moda da molti anni, ma chiaramente ci sono eccezioni. Ms Bujold inventa bene e scrive pure bene, i personaggi sono reali e spesso tormentati...

This could be Zelazny -
There is more than a little Roger Zelazny - themes and inspiration - in this book. The difference is that Gaiman goes where Zelazny never did - in the mythology of America. And where there isn't one, he makes one up. It's a good story from many points of view. No wonder NG won so many prizes with th ... (continue)

This is my first ebook - I've read it between the leather covers protecting a brand-new Kindle over last week, while moving from London to Rwanda, where I am going to be awhile. But forget the medium, and never mind the place.
The arabist Tim Mackintosh-Smith concludes his travel trilogy on the footsteps of the great Moroccan traveler Ibn Battutah, and what he began - in his calculations - twenty-five years ago as a travel book has grown - with him I would say - into something better. There's poetry in this third book, and I don't mean only the quotations. There is philosophy - of the kind reflected on the wings of verse and prose, and there is TMS's usual English wit. And much more.
I don't know about you, but any other travel book I might come across for the rest of my life will have a seriously hard time to compete with TMS trilogy.
In my own small way I've followed TMS following IB for some time now. When I got hold of the first book of the trilogy ('Travels with a Tangerine') - in an airport bookshop, I confess - I was living in Ethiopia, preparing to move back to Europe after years in that country. The second installment, 'The hall of a thousand columns' found me living and working between China and India. And now this one, which I have delayed purchasing as I was away in Italy when it was published in the UK, and it is now - in its digital form - the only company I yet have in Kigali, Rwanda.
I am tempted to quote the book myself - TMS quoting Ibn al-Khatib, quoting...
We two are strangers here
And strangers are one another kin.
Could one be kin to a book? Perhaps one can.
Tim Mackintosh-Smith: don't stop writing. Grazie, and good luck to you.
