看了許多李敖的書，這本可以說是絕對性的代表作。和某些白話文作者不知節制的描述比起，李敖雖然是白描卻恰到好處。
身為小說，嚴謹的考證會讓整本書充實；但是若了無新意便只為汗青，再加上不失本意的想像才稱得上是本小說。
書中一句『丁香潔身自好，也好看，也好聞。但要做中藥，得磨成粉煮成湯才有用。若不粉身碎骨，它也只是好看好聞而已。』，犧牲奉獻的精神不言而喻。正和後邊譚嗣同的死證相互輝映。
