Anne O’Brien’s “Virgin Widow" is set during the tumultuous reign of Edward IV, in the Wars of the Roses. The protagonist is Anne Neville, daughter of Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick, a man known as The Kingmaker. Although she was both Princess of Wales and Queen of England in her lifetime (as R ... This is an average Donna Leon novel -a decent read with the brain switched off, but better than the previous one I read of her. Two stars mainly for the setting of her stories in Venice!

As I was reading this novel, I kept waiting for something to happen! Unfortunately, the only part I really enjoyed was the last 50 pages or so. Not good if you have to wade through more than 250 pages of tedious story-telling to get there! Slow, slow but with an interesting final twist.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

A very good book and very well written. It deals with a very difficult topic: a boy loses his father in the terrorist attack of the Twin Towers in New York. Nevertheless, it is somewhat funny, the humour is nice. It is worth reading it. I finished and found myself weeping because the three last chap ... (continue)

(continue) - — May 18, 2011 | Add your feedback

Sempre simpatica e intelligente la Littizzetto e la sua lettura non stanca mai, seppure gli argomenti siano spessi triti e ritriti. Vale la pena leggerlo per farsi un paio di risate.

How does Kate Atkinson do this? She takes three different genres -literary, detective and humorous fiction - puts them in a bag, shakes them together and ends up with a book you can neither classify nor put down.

The Daughter of Time is an entertaining and thought-provoking fiction. I recommend it for all amatuer historians out there. It opens your eyes to the bias of history. And for someone like me who is passionate about the Plantagenets and Richard III...

Tulip Fever began in a deceptively simple style which made me think I was too old to read it. However, after the first twist I was hooked, trying to guess all possible outcomes (and not succeeding). It was exciting, original and clever and left you wanting more.

In Tiger Hills, Sarita Mandanna has created a mesmerising world which the reader is drawn into. The vivid descriptions of the landscape transport the reader to Coorg in Southern India, in the spanning between the 19th and 20th centuries, where the story if set. The beautiful settings make a perfect ... (continue)

Another fabulous read by Kate Atkinson, my favourite contemporary English writer, featuring the main character Jackson Brodie again, who has been the thread running through the previous three 'crime' type novels by this writer. If you haven't read Kate Atkinson's other Jackson Brody novels yet (Case ... (continue)
