A Gathering of Old Men by Ernest J. Gaines is referred to by many as one of the best-written novels on Southern race relations in over 20 years. This story, which takes place in Louisiana during the 1970's, is about how one young white woman and 18 very old black men toting 12-gauge shot guns take a stand to protect a member of their community from a group of Klansmen who want nothing better than to take the law into their own hands. Beau Boutan, a mean spirited and hateful Cajun farmer, has been shot and killed by a black member of the community.

When I recall all of the popular westerns my brothers and I grew up watching on TV during the 1960’s and 1970’s (Big Valley, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, High Chaparral, The Rifleman, to name a few), I’m reminded that no era in our country’s history defines us as a nation more than the expansion and development of the American West. Despite all the people who roamed the Western Plains back then, the acknowledgment of African Americans and their contribution in settling the West is almost nonexistent. That’s why Sean Chandler’s Ebony Marshal series is such a welcome addition to the world of African American literature as it is to the western genre. It features Tyler Musler, an African American US Marshal inspired from the legendary life of Deputy Marshal, Bass Reeves.

    • Review: THE MEASURE OF A MAN by Sidney Poitier
    • When I chose to read THE MEASURE OF A MAN: A SPIRITUAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY by Sidney Poitier when it was first published in 2000, it had nothing to do with the fact that he is an American icon who is recognized and respected by many throughout the world.

FAQ See all

I see a shelf I like. How can I keep track of its updates?

If you know the person, add as a friend. Otherwise, add as a neighbor. Either way, you will get to stay on top of future updates via RSS feeds.

I see a shelf I don't want to ever see again. What can I do?

Choose "block", and this shelf will be filtered out for all purposes.

How does the voting work?
Find a comment helpful / unhelpful? Cast your vote. Only one vote from each person will be counted. Every hour we gather all the votes, add them up, add some magic source, and there we have the new sorting for the comments on the page of this book!
What's the difference between friends and neighbors?
Friends are people you know. Neighbors are people you don't know but you'd like to keep track of their updates anyway.
Would I would leave a trace when I visit other people's shelf?
You get to choose. If you can choose to visit anonymously, you will not get to see who has visited your shelf. Fair deal.
