    Libro incentrato sulla malinconia e su "le régret pour le passé". Il tempo (e l'ingratitudine, suo corollario), vero Signore del mondo, segna e muta la sorte anche di chi, come il chevalier Des Touches, è stato un soldato valoroso. Interessantissima la tecnica utilizzata da Barbey D'Aurevilly, il quale per creare questa nuance organizza il racconto su una doppia analessi impostata su una tripla referenza temporale, tanto che su tutto sembra calare la scure della dura sentenza: "rien, jamais, ne sera de nouveau".
