The Complete Greek Tragedies: Aeschylus II (The Complete Greek Tragedies) By Aeschylus

I have the second edition, which has a revised edition (made in 1990) of Prometheus Bound.

Aeschylus' tragedies apart from Oresteia. Good translation, useful introduction, but I would like some "further reading" which is sadly lacking in this series.

Benardete's translation is, as always, uncompromising to an awesome degree, but any reader prepared to dive deep can profit a lot from his work; and David Grene's handling of Seven against Thebes and Prometheus Bound conveys quite lively the solemnity of Aeschylus; I'm not sure about accuracy, but from some other 2nd-handed quotes I guess he's just good as well.

I'm planning to buy the rest of the Greek tragedies in this series, first for the price, and second for the plain English that could be more of an aid in reading the original.

Nietzsche and Modern Times: A Study of Bacon, Descartes, and Nietzsche By Laurence Lampert

Simply put: a very meticulous reading and brilliant interpretation of Bacon, Descartes, and Nietzsche. Pros: The author has detected their common intention: to incorporate the usefulness of science into society by the secret rule of the philosopher. And his reading of Bacon's New Atlantis and "Holy War" is, from my point of view, superb. The rest of the book may not shine so brightly, but it's still worth the effort.

Cons: By using Nietzsche as the key to understanding Bacon and Descartes, Lampert has done a wonderful job in advertising the necessity of us to confront Nietzsche; but his longest part, interpreting the 5th book of Joyous Science, is not such a pleasure to read - or does Lampert think that what Nietzsche left unsaid he better keep silent about it as well? By my reading of his other work "Leo Strauss and Nietzsche" I can only answer in the negative. I just couldn't understand what is Lampert's understanding of Nietzsche's will to power doctrine - or is it just me?! - Nevertheless, his reading of the aphorisms on woman and man (p.368-387) is still very good and recommended.

The Shorter Socratic Writings: "Apology of Socrates to the Jury," "Oeconomicus," and "Symposium" By Xenophon
  • simply the best English translation one could get of Xenophon. This book also has commentaries for each work, which is, although not a detailed reading, satisfactory enough for beginners of Xenophon to become aware of the problems lurking behind his style.

The City and Man By Leo Strauss
  • In fact, like all of Strauss' works, a very difficult book to understand. I hope to make a rereading if I have time. The reader might want to consult Seth Benardete's review of this book for some help.

Encounters and Reflections: Conversations with Seth Benardete By Seth Benardete
  • Benardete's recollection of university life in dialogue. Lots of funny characters, and I have an impression that many Classicists (also lovers of Classics) are totally paranoids and maniacs - in a cute sort of way, of course!

Leo Strauss and Nietzsche By Laurence Lampert
Creation: (A Studio book) By Ernst Haas
Refractions: Thoughts On Aesthetics and Photography By Ralph Gibson

The best book on Xenophon's Hiero, an exciting dialogue of two great thinkers concerning the relation between the statesman and the wise, and a funny but profound correspondence - I cannot think of a more interesting combination!

This is Strauss' easiest work, but it still took me three readings to thoroughly understand it. He discusses Xenophon's consideration of being esoteric in a more explicit manner (compared to his other works), and is more generous in repeating important details in Xenophon's text. A MUST for anyone interested in: Western political thought, Xenophon, Machiavelli, Hegel, Heidegger, Kojeve, Strauss.

Self-Knowledge in Plato's Phaedrus
  • Good overall interpretation of this beautiful but difficult Platonic dialogue. The palinode section is definitely recommended; I felt more could be said about the Thamus / Theuth myth though.
