I was expecting more from this Man Booker Prize shortlisted novel.

Dico la veritá. Visto tutto il clamore che é seguito all'uscita di questo libro, mi aspettavo MOLTO di piú. Mi aspettavo una saga familiare avvincente, con personaggi indimenticabili, un intreccio superlativo, uno stile originale. Invece mi é sembrata un gran bluff.

Dico la veritá. Visto tutto il clamore che é seguito all'uscita di questo libro, mi aspettavo MOLTO di piú. Mi aspettavo una saga familiare avvincente, con personaggi indimenticabili, un intreccio superlativo, uno stile originale. Invece mi é sembrata un gran bluff.
La prima parte mi stava piacendo molto, il racconto della vita dei contadini, il suo scorrere con le stagioni, lenta, metodica, ritmata dai lavori della terra e dalla cura degli animali mi ricordava molto le atmosfere ritratte da Ermanno Olmi ne "L'albero degli Zoccoli", film che ho molto amato. L'ambientazione nel Ferrarese mi piaceva, di nuovo mi riportava alla mente atmosfere agresti e rurali.
E anche l'intreccio, in questa prima parte, é decisamente convincente: serrato, pieno di eventi, appassionante nonostante lo stile quasi a flusso di coscienza, fatto di continui flash back e forwards, tangenti, riprese di discorso, difficile da seguire se non si puó leggere tutto d'un fiato.
E poi la delusione: una seconda parte che si apre con descrizioni infinite che si perdono in dettagli assolutamente inutili (se non addirittura nocivi) alla storia, excursus tediosi come pochi ne ho letti in vita mia: ma Antonio Pennacchi quanto pensa che me ne freghi a me di sapere in quali quantitá il ghiaino viene mischiato al cemento per fare il manto stradale? o quanti centimetri di terra bisogni calcolare per costruire gli argini? La risposta é meno di zero, soprattutto quando vorrei invece continuare a leggere delle vicissitudini dei protagonisti. Dá proprio l'idea di una sezione scopiazzata da archivi e altri libri per "fare pagine", assolutamente superflua e veramente, veramente tediosa. Mi ha irritata tantissimo questo voler sfoggiare una conoscenza tecnica e nozionistica molto specifica a completo discapito della narrazione principale.
Nella terza parte la storia recupera un po' il suo corso, ma é sfilacciata, diluita, non piú avvincente come nella prima parte, e prende una piega molto melodrammatica alla Centovetrine (il male). Il finale é affrettato, con un'ultima rivelazione che vorrebbe essere, forse, un colpo di scena ma non lascia alcuna soddisfazione.
Insomma, questo libro mi é sembrato una grande furbata, sulla scia del successo riscosso da "Mio fratello é figlio unico" tratto da Il fasciocomunista. Sí, i dialoghi in dialetto ferrarese e veneto sono divertenti e piacevoli, ricordano un po' "Amarcord" e "8 1/2" di Fellini. Ma la storia me la aspettavo davvero piú densa, piú serrata, piú avvincente: infondo per la gran parte del libro Pennacchi si limita a ri-raccontare la storia d'Italia del XX secolo in toni semplicistici.
