    I give up

I pretty much have the same complaints as last time. I literally spotted the plot twists by page 3. Keyes takes forever and ever to get the point. Just to save myself the time, I skipped the end, read it and put the book down for a week. Boredom drove me back to it. The only interesting bits were when she (Lucy) discovers that her Dad is an alcoholic despite the fact that EVERYONE has already told her so, however Keyes has never develops this and she never says what to the father after Lucy deserts him. Also the fact that her co-worker has slept with her boyfriend is revealed in a lone paragraph at the end of the book. This made me feel shortchanged. This book could have been a lot shorter and more interesting had Keyes actually developed the good parts. In my opinion, Gus comes back far too many times to be believeable and if Keyes intended for us to actually believe in Gus she could have made him just a little bit likable because all along I thought he was a drunk from the beginning despite the fact that it took Lucy the entire book to realize it. The most annoying thing about the book was Keyes, over use of the the term "Er...." to fill space. It can be found on practically every page and ever a while gets to be annoying as shit. I'm sure she still has fans out there, but after this, I give up. I'll look elsewhere for my literary smut. ... (continue)

Cover of Eden Close
  • I loved the Pilot's Wife. But this book comes with a twist that any good reader sees coming from page 10. The story is terribly transparent, and the only reason one completes it is that you want to see if the book proves you wrong. It doesn't. You never fall in love with the characters, though at one point you do feel bad for the story's victim. Sorry, but this was a miss. ... (continue)

I know this book is a bestseller and that Mr. Irving is well thought of, but I personally hated this book. It started off very good. It made me laugh a lot, but after a while esp. about the time I got to "The Pension Grillpazer." It upset me that Irving violated a general rule in writing; do not under any circumstances write a book about a writer writing a book. The book just dragged on, and though I understood that it was supposed to be about Garp's life, I wanted it to wrap up already. The book stopped being interesting about the time Jenny Fields was made into a feminist hero. I do have to say there were a few well written parts beyond that esp. the affair that Helen has, but I found it all and all tedious. It angered me completely that I had to ask someone else who had read it what the book was about, even though I was reading it. It was seriously not my cup of tea. I wanted to read more of his work originally, but now I think I need a rest break. ... (continue)

Cover of Watermelon
  • A bit frustrating at times. The characters don't seem entirely believeable and you will spend a lot of time begging Ms. Keyes to get to the point. But it is a good read and you are guranteed to want to finish it all in one sitting.

  • Dr. Young is currently my professor and so I had to read his book for class. Wonderful read, despite the fact that the book is aimed mostly at educators. Really makes you think about language and what is acceptable in schools and whether it is okay to leave your identity at the door.
