It is hard to imagine how Arthur imagined those scenes out in space, when space travel is still a matter of imagination. And the plots in the story: AI revolting, space travel, the born of civilization etc.... is so familiar to modern SF readers which proves the influence of this book.
Like Asimov's work this novel will give you a sense of greatness of the universe, which is much less subtle in modern SF stories. They are good at showing you how big the universe is outside our little Earth.
Due to some changes in living habit, I spent a lot more time in completing this book. indeed once I though I won't be able to complete it, the first 2/3 of the book is on some trivial matters which are frankly a bit too plain.

But as the story unfolds, it is these trivial scene that add up to the climax. The sense of loss of Kathy and Tommy, the sheer injustice of the situation and the indifference of those who once matters most to Kath and Tommy (the guardians) are immensely shocking, and how they go on with their lives after the truth unfolds show the great inner strength.
Overall this is a great read, a very well constructed SF piece. A simple theme but contains a deep impact in it.
