One of the best books I have ever read. This story had everything from love to war and everything in-between. Scarlett O'Hara is one of the most famous women in literature and her travails through Civil War and Reconstruction Georgia has to be one of the best fictional accounts of that period of American history. While it is a good story about that period the romance and personal relationships throughout the whole book are just as riveting. Scarlett O'Hara, Rhett Butler, Ashley Wilkes, Melanie Wilkes, Aunt Pitty, Mammy and countless others weave together so perfectly the story couldn't have been written any better.

George and Lennie are two migrant workers in California trying to make their way so they can afford to buy a house and 'live on the fatta the lan'', of course with lots of rabbits for Lennie to take care of. This book was a little hard to read because you knew simple-minded Lennie was going to cause a problem you just didn't know how bad it would be. I'd read for a little bit and then put it down because Lennie hadn't caused any trouble yet, but finally read it through because I had to know how it finished.

A masterpiece of 20th century American literature. This book was a very well written and topical (when it came out in 1939) depiction of the American depression. While a work of fiction, and more symbolic than realistic, it had (and continues to have) a profound effect on people who read it. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it is the story of false hopes, thwarted desires and broken dreams.

A good story of the fishing and canning community of Monterey and the characters on Cannery Row. The main ones being the four free-spirits of Hazel, Eddie, Mack and Hughie, good hearted characters that always mean well but create bigger problems when they start drinking. Also includes many other interesting characters like the flop house madam Dora, the biologist Doc and the abused husband Gay. I'd read this book before but had forgotten until I got to the part with the beer milkshake, you don't forget about reading a thing like that.

Candide

A fantastic dissertation on the misery of man and his need to maintain a positive outlook. No matter how bad or good you have it somebody always has it better or worse.

Since this book is actually a compilation of 8 different stories, I figured I'd write a short review of each story after I've read it:

Since this book is actually a compilation of 8 different stories, I figured I'd write a short review of each story after I've read it:
Death in Venice:
Absolutely terrible bordering on pedophilia. I'm sure there's some significant underlying theme or allusions or hidden meanings in this story but to me it was an (almost) sickening recounting of an old man's passion for a young boy.
Tonio Kroger:
The story of a bourgeois manque. Pointless, to me this story didn't go anywhere or accomplish anything.
Mario and the Magician:
The story of a family that sees a hypnotist's show over their holiday in an Italian beach town. Since I'm not a fan of hypnotists its tragic ending for him did not bring about any sympathy from me.
Disorder and Early Sorrow:
Another story where nothing much happens. This short story recounts an evening in a German family's house shortly after World War I. The Cornelius family hosts a small party for the younger generation and their young daughter has her first crush.
A Man and His Dog:
Another story that basically is summed up completely in the title. The first 10 pages of this story deal with the physicality and physiology of the author's dog, Bashar. The next 10 pages deal with where he takes his dog for a walk and the last 10 pages tell what the dog does when he's on his walk.
Will I ever finish this boring book?
The Blood of the Walsungs:
I probably haven't encountered a more shallow, vapid, annoying almost incestuous couple in any story I've read in my life. The twins Siegmund and Sieglinde just deserve to be slapped back into reality.
Tristan:
The story of a doctor who has peculiar dealings with a sickly married woman while they are both "taking a cure" at a spa. His motivations and goals aren't completely understood but he seems to be a man without scruples in taking advantage of the sick woman without resolution at the end of the story.
Felix Krull:
The story of a man recounting his childhood and adolescence growing up along the Rhine in a family that isn't part of the bourgeois of the town. In the end of the story the family loses everything in bankruptcy and the father commits suicide.
A very boring book in total and I would not recommend reading it to anyone, nothing really happens in these stories and you get angry if not sometimes disgusted reading them. Thankfully I finally finished, because once I start a book I have to finish it.

Un libro divertente pieno di cenntenaio barzellette sui Carabinieri, molte di queste ho sentito prima ma con altre protagoniste. Due di miei preferiti sono stati:
Un carabiniere, dal dottore: "Mi capita un fatto strano: ogni volta che bevo una tazzina di caffe' mi vieni una fitta all'occhio sinis ... (continue)

Un libro divertente pieno di cenntenaio barzellette sui Carabinieri, molte di queste ho sentito prima ma con altre protagoniste. Due di miei preferiti sono stati:
Un carabiniere, dal dottore: "Mi capita un fatto strano: ogni volta che bevo una tazzina di caffe' mi vieni una fitta all'occhio sinistra!"
"Provi senza il cucchiaino"
Durante un turno di servizio, in una notte molto fredda, due carabinieri si fanno delle domande: "Che cosa succederebbe se, per il freddo, ti cadesse un orecchio?"
"Diventerei un po' sordo"
"E se li perdessi entrambi?"
"Beh, diventerei cieco, ovviamente!"
"Che cazzo dici?"
"E' logico: senza le orecchie mi cadrebbe il capello sugli occhi!"
Bello, ma forse non comperesti se avevi un parenti negli carabinieri.

- Che sciocchezza, scusi. Io mi sarei sentito l'uomo piu' fortunato del mondo. A lei non piacciono i dolci?
- Certro che mi piacciono. Li adoro. Anche i miei bambini li adorono.
- Ah, lei ha dei bambini.
- Ne ho due, uno piu' bello e piu' caro dell'altro
- E fabbrica bombe...

(Einaudi Ragazzi #4) Questo non e' un libro di Disney. Da qui animale muoiono, uccidono, andare a cacciare e diventano ferite, ma questa e' vita reale. Qualche volta le storie diventano un po' noioso e un po' lento. Veramente sono felice di aver finito.

Un bel racconto delle storie e leggende bergamasche del medievo alle 1800.
