流行小說《達文西密碼》曾令宗教界及社會大眾引起一遍對基督教史討論的漣漪。雖然該小說有很多虛構成份，但有幾點問題是有歷史根據，而且在考古學幫助下有更多有關早期基督教的知識已被發現。本書《The Gnostic Discoveries》就是要介紹一下有關在1945年發現的「哈瑪迪藏書」(Nag Hammadi Codex)中的基督教信仰。而藏書亦是屬於一個被羅馬天主教庭定為異端的名為「諾斯底」(Gnostic) 的教派。

這個考古學的發現十分重要，第一因為這套藏書令諾斯底的信仰學說重見天日，令我們得知更多有關基督拯救世人的信息；第二是我們知道除了現時流行的四福音外還有更多的福音書，當中包括Gospel of Mary, Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Philip, Secret Book of John, The Letter of Peter to Philip, The First Apocalypse of James等等。

耶穌就好像孔子一樣他本身並無寫作或編系一個有系統的學說，他四處講道與人群接觸，於是在他死後便一直流傳著有關「基督」(The Savior)的不同基督教流派。但無論那一派都是相信耶穌基督是為拯救人類而來的，而且都與當時的羅馬帝國不合。直至到公元三百多年，羅馬皇帝突然改宗，而且在公元325年的「尼西亞會議」(Nicaea, 意為Nike羅馬勝利女神)會議上羅馬皇帝與其中一些基督教流派暗合統一了基督教信仰定為正典，此之為的「尼西亞信經」(Nicaea’s Creed)。從此在政治及軍事力量支持下的「正教」旦生，其他堅持自己的基督信仰派別包括諾斯底派則被視為異端，幾近滅絕於世上。幸而天無絕人之路，今天的考古學將很多重要的早期基督信仰文獻重新再現世上。

在哈瑪迪藏書中有很多有趣的發現，而且對現時的「基督教信仰」(Christanity)有很大的衝擊。例如在Gospel of Mary當中抹大拉的馬利亞就是一位十分重要的基督信仰傳道者。而且該福音認為女性在傳揚福音上與男性有著同等重要的地位。在Secret Book of John當中基督向John(The brother of James, the son of Zebdee)啟示在人類的內在有著神的「聖靈」(Divine Spirit)，人只要往內探求便得到拯救。
此外人類的生老病死是由於一個叫Yaldabaoth的「創造世界之神」(Creator of the World)所做成的，他誤以為自己是唯一的神，而且妒忌人類內在擁有「聖靈」於是常常加害於人。

本書作者用近二百頁的編幅將哈瑪迪藏書簡要地介紹給廣大讀者，藏書是用科普特文(Coptics)寫成的，是現在幾近失傳的文字。哈瑪迪藏書的發現是現代的一個奇蹟。作者Marvin Meyer是研究諾斯底教派的翹楚，而文筆亦十分適合大眾讀者。
