I'd say that this books is to thrillers what Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita is to pornography.

A really good book to know the basic events in Australian history

I didn't know anything about Australian history before reading this book, except maybe that it was discovered by a British guy a bunch of centuries ago, so I was uncertain where to start from. I didn't know anything about Australian history before reading this book, except maybe that it was discovered by a British guy a bunch of centuries ago, so I was uncertain where to start from. This was a very good choice: I think it's almost impossible to squeeze in many more facts in only 350 pages, and yet it doesn't feel like everything is just crammed in. The author manages to take his space to digress on some subjects and he is also capable of being humorous from time to time -- which, in my opinion, is essential when talking about Australia. With this book I now feel like I have the basics to read more complex books about specific Australian historic events.

I liked the first book enough to go on with the second one, but after few boring chapters I simply gave up.

Morrison at his best: when he's free to do whatever he wants he has few rivals.
Also, the deluxe edition is pretty good, I'd say it's worth the extra money.

What I did.

I really loved the first two stories, while I didn't enjoy that much the last -- and longest -- one (probably too far in time and space from me).
The first and second stories are just wonderful: deep and moving, with a delightful touch of fantasy and silliness.

Il libro mi ha messo a disagio diverse volte, soprattutto perché mi ha posto di fronte questioni da cui di solito preferisco distogliere lo sguardo perché, come sempre, è più facile catalogare qualcosa come "sbagliato", "immorale" o anche "ambiguo" che fermarsi ad analizzare e cercare di crearsi un ... Il libro mi ha messo a disagio diverse volte, soprattutto perché mi ha posto di fronte questioni da cui di solito preferisco distogliere lo sguardo perché, come sempre, è più facile catalogare qualcosa come "sbagliato", "immorale" o anche "ambiguo" che fermarsi ad analizzare e cercare di crearsi un proprio pensiero. In questo il fumetto è decisamente interessante ed efficace, dato che tutto si basa su un'onesta e asettica cronaca di tutto ciò che l'autore ha pensato, provato e dibattuto negli anni che ha passato da cliente delle prostitute.

Erano davvero tanti anni che non leggevo un fumetto così innovativo e sorprendente: Mazzucchelli non si limita a scrivere un romanzo attraverso i disegni, ma realizza un'opera che sfrutta appieno le tecniche del fumetto e che non potrebbe venire realizzata diversamente.

Erano davvero tanti anni che non leggevo un fumetto così innovativo e sorprendente: Mazzucchelli non si limita a scrivere un romanzo attraverso i disegni, ma realizza un'opera che sfrutta appieno le tecniche del fumetto e che non potrebbe venire realizzata diversamente.
Questo libro è l'esempio perfetto di cosa si potrebbe realizzare con i fumetti, se più autori avessero la capacità e la voglia di mettersi alla prova anziché di limitarsi a illustrare le proprie storie sfruttando binari già tracciati.
Mi ha ricordato perché, tanti anni fa, ho iniziato ad amare il fumetto, e soprattutto perché, in potenza, questo medium non ha nulla da invidiare alla cosiddetta letteratura "alta".

I hope I'll finish the last two books in less time, but I'm more than sure I'm gonna finish them.
