Cover of The Historian
  • I usually do not like vampire stories, but this is a completely different kind. The historical and scholarly aspect is fascinating. Pick up this book if you are in the mood for something smart.

Another well researched page turner from Philippa Gregory! The history of the war of the roses can get very confusing (numerous plots and betrayals on both sides), but I think the author did an excellent job giving the reader all of the information. Gregory adds a handful of gory battle scenes and supernatural elements that make THE WHITE QUEEN different from her other novels. Despite the sappy beginning, this is not really a romance. It's very political and it captures how chaotic and brutal England was during this time.

    What I liked:

-Gregory's take on who could have been responsible for the disappearance of the princes
-How witchcraft was used to explain certain events, which made it more interesting

    What I didn't like:

    -The repetitive, overly dramatic dialogue
-The 1st person narration that provided little insight into any of the other characters, particularly the villains George and Richard

THE WHITE QUEEN was an exciting read (the 2nd half especially). I loved to loathe many of the characters. The ending makes me look forward to the rest of the series!
