When I was young and reading this, I was very impressed by "the intellectuals at Berkeley." I didn't see the jibe in it. The protest where Kesey denounced protests, etc. And I think I still fail to catch what the ending is supposed to imply. "We blew it" sounds obvious, but...really? Is Tom Wolfe going to say that without having tried it? all fly on the wall? This is one of the best books I've ever read.

I read this during the summer in either high school or college; probably high school, now that I think of it. I was into the hippie scene at the time and anything relating to the Grateful Dead was a must.
More important, this was my introduction to Wolfe.
