I got this on a friend's recommendation and I wasn't aware that it is quite a famous book - or that Barbara Vine is Ruth Rendell!
I thought it was brilliant. The writing is superb and turns a fairly anodyne plot into a truly gripping story. Excellent characterisation and, throughout, the sort of understatement only a British writer can pull off.
This was an interesting mystery as family secrets are revealed a bit at a time. At first, the slowness of the narrative annoyed me, but overtime I began to appreciate the way Faith learned about her family's past along with the reader.
