A Month in the Country - James Lloyd Carr
An absolute pleasure. I have a thing about great short books. Set in rural England, it's a relatively simple story (but with real plot) of a young man overcoming sadness after war. All the timeless themes are here. Enormously rewarding short read. Shared this with a book club; it's not just me who loved it. On my Great Short Book list -- the books are short, the list isn't.
This is a jewel of a book. In a very short space (only 135 pages) the author captures a time and scene of remarkable clarity. It is, of sorts, a story of redemption from that most awful of human sorrows, the tragedy of war. But, the author has chosen the vehicle of everlasting Art to bring the healing to the otherwise lost survivor. Beautiful prose, descriptions. Highly recommended....Continua
