Wolfe must also throw his considerable weight into another thorny case, this one involving a rich society widow bedeviled by poison-pen letters -- and a poisonous plot as black as Wolfe's orchids with roots even more twisted.

...ContinuaWolfe is determined to procure these unique plants from Mr. Hewett, another orchid grower. In the first crime scene “Black Orchids” the death occurs at the flower show where Mr. Hewett shows the orchids, and Wolfe’s reward for saving him from a murder charge is the “transfer” of all three plants. There’s not a lot of clues, but Wolfe is able to determine who the killer is, and there’s a big surprise in the end.
In the second mystery "Cordially invited to meet death" a woman hires Wolfe to find out who is trying to ruin her reputation. However, she dies before he has a chance to go very far in his investigation. He sends a flower arrangement of with three black orchids to her funeral and tells Archie that the case is over because he no longer has a client. Archie can't let it go and continues to search for clues to the murder. Eventually, Wolfe is able to identify the killer before Inspector Cramer can serve a warrant to hold Wolfe and Archie as witnesses. Rex Stout's stories are never trivial: well orchestrated and not devoid of humor they are certainly among the best detective stories of the '900. Recommended.

Archie non riesce a lasciar perdere e continua a cercare indizi sull'omicidio.
