Case One: Olivia Land, youngest and most beloved of the Land girls, goes missing in the night and is never seen again. Thirty years later, two of her surviving sisters unearth a shocking clue to Olivias disappearance among the clutter of their childhood home. . .
Case Two: Theo delights in his daughter Lauras wit, effortless beauty, and selfless love. But her first day as an associate in his law firm is also the day when Theos world turns upside down. . .
Case Three: Michelle looks around one day and finds herself trapped in a hell of her own making. A very needy baby and a very demanding husband make her every waking moment a reminder that somewhere, somehow, shed made a grave mistake and would spend the rest of her life paying for it--until a fit of rage creates a grisly, bloody escape.
As Private Detective Jackson Brodie investigates all three cases, startling connections and discoveries emerge. Inextricably caught up in his clients grief, joy, and desire, Jackson finds their unshakable need for resolution very much like his own.
Kate Atkinsons celebrated talent makes for a novel that positively sparkles with surprise, comedy, tragedy, and constant, page-turning delight....Continua
the first of the Jackson Brodie series. I enjoyed Private eye Jacksonìs casual investigations into 3 cold cases, all concerning very tragic crimes; the main protagonist did not fail to capture me with the ups and downs of his love relatiosnhips with the wrong women he meets and memories of his unfortunate family, albeit I had already read another book of the series. I loved the setting of all the stories described skillfully and the gallery of 'mad' women the man in question seems to encounter on his meanderings....Continua
We read this in my book group. We liked that it was set in Cambridge, where we are. It was a little confusing at first, jumping around. The little girl that goes missing and the toy tugs at your heart strings. And when the killer is revealed, their explanation is heart breaking....Continua
Antihero and former police inspector Jackson Brodie investigates three case histories while attempting to understand his own life. This is a thriller with more to it than the usual hand-me-down-salsa-of-the-day page-turner.
This is the real stuff!
I really enjoyed this book although not as much as When Will There Be Good News. The first of her novels centred around cases taken on by ex-policeman now PI, Brodie, Atkinson takes you into her characters musings on life after death and loss with witty observations. The cases are poignant, sad, inevitable and it is not just Brodie who is confused by the end. Not everything is tied up neatly leading to more confusion. Major and minor characters are rounded and full of life, even the sad ones....Continua
