The prominent historian relates the story of the extraordinary man whose influence and talents helped Catherine to rule her Empire. The rich details of life in the luxurious Court can make today's life seem grim indeed. The account, for all its length, remains interesting and enjoyable to read, from first page to last.
One warning: the print in the edition reviewed here is miniscule, on the level of the print in booklets which accompany CDs. Anyone with vision problems might want to read it on an electronic device and enhance the font, or try to find an audio version of it.
In any format, the book is a marvelous look at a storied period in history.
