Sobering tales of bravery abound in this story of the evacuation of France in WWII. It seems the French were a pretty erratic partner and the British Army had to fight tooth and nail to extricate itself from the mess.
Throughout the book there are amazing tales of bravery in the face on difficult circumstances (often of the allies own making). I was struck by how much young men, thrown raw into battle, had to endure and what a tragedy the loss of so many lives was.

By far the best book on the subject. Heartbreaking how many foot soldiers were needlessly sent to their death because of the inflated egos and incompetence of their superiors.
