Molto grazioso e ironico. Bisogna avere la pazienza di stare dietro alla Austen e cogliere questa ironia, perché è molto diversa da quella contemporanea.
Rilettura sul sito Gutenberg: all'inizio ero meno entusiasta rispetto a quando l'ho letto per la prima volta anni fa, poi invece ho riconfermato la massima valutazione, gli ultimi due terzi sono impareggiabili per la caratterizzazione della società dell'epoca, con le sue "macchiette", e per ironia. Inoltre conoscendo ormai la trama ho potuto meglio apprezzare le sfumature dei diversi personaggi (la gelosia di Mr.Knightley, il rapporto tra Jane Fairfax e Franck Churchill). E ho anche trovato fantastica la cattiveria con cui viene descritta Mrs. Elton! Invece mi ha fatto soffrire molto di più Mr. Woodhouse: con un genitore così il parricidio avrebbe molte scusanti...

The bad weather continued next morning but in the afternoon it stopped raining, the sun came out and it was summer again.
A slow book and not too interesting. This story started with the marriage of the Westons and finishes with three marriages, including the main character Emma Woodhouse. Without giving too much away, Emma at the beginning seems to find a way to involve herself in peoples lives and works to arrange relationships with varying levels of success. There are a few couples in the story and the arc of the book concerns their relationships and the connections of the small town of Highbury.
On another tangent, all through the story I couldn't help but think how boring life must have been 200 years ago with no TV, internet and smartphones.
This version was an Everyman's Library version so I had to read the Introduction after reading the book because the Intro gives away the whole story before you read it.
...Continuasarà che, essendo un maschio, la Austen può piacermi fino a un certo punto, però pur non potendone negare le abilità narrative e di scrittura - soprattutto nei dialoghi - k ha lasciato abbastanza freddo. A mio modesto e 'ignorante' parere, più importante che bello.
