Even though the story is set in Hong Kong, I felt I was landed in a complete distant land. The reason lies in the fact that I have never been given (or never cared for) the opportunity to inquire into the world of pre-war Hong Kong created by expatriates, or the early colonial settlers of Hong Kong. As a native Hong Konger, I am particularly drawn to the portion taken place during the war, woven into it an epic love story that has yet to be realised until the handover. It does not look like one, but it is a love story. A beautiful, understated, almost hidden impossible love story, set in Hong Kong before and after WWII. Great book. I 've read it three times.
