SERIES EDITED BY CYNTHIA BRANTLEY JOHNSON
After light exposure to movies of Frankenstein, I was amazed to read this original story, written by Mary Shelley. It’s nothing like the story promoted by movies. This is a deep book, focused on the transformation of an innocent man into a vengeful monster by the scorn of people and the deprivation of love and companionship. It’s probably the first psychological thriller written. Themes include our light and dark sides, the plight of those in poverty or who are ugly or shabbily dressed, and the dual nature of revenge-
Mary Shelley presented an interesting story that created many different questions within the reader’s mind about what it truly means to be a monster. The use of the different perspectives that she used to guide us through the book allowed for a sense of excitement because I was able to see how each character’s story related to the other and overlapped to create the final picture. What I enjoyed most was the message that I was left with upon finishing the book and even though the book may be a sci-fi horror, Shelley was able to incorporate a significant message that many should become aware of and possibly apply to their own lives. There is a mixture of self-doubt and guilt that overwhelms a majority of the story’s tone that many should be able to relate to in some sense which is what allows for a more realistic feeling as I read Shelley’s story. Through the way that she portrays some of the character’s stories, I could not help but feel pity and sadness for them as they go through several ups and downs within their lives. I enjoyed the way the book drew me and evoked a series of different emotions as I read the book that made me feel as if I knew each character and made me never want to put the book down.
I was really exciting to start this book but I can't say to have enjoyed if not for 30/40 pages at half way. I consider it a well written book, but, in my opinion, too often is given priority to the 'poetry' rather than the actual story. It is a book from another era, obviously; it is not my favourite kind....Continua
Come tutti i grandi classici di rispetto, un ottimo libro, avvincente, appassionante, che smonta da sè lo stereotipo cinematografico.
Some only knew Frankenstein through novel as others know it through movies but if you'll be reading the original novel by Mary Shelley as I have read it before you;ll be astounded on its story with how Frankenstein evolve gothically and its story line injected with romance. This is a classic you shouldn't missed. Great read....Continua
