I bought it many many years ago, but I hadn't found the inspiration to read it up until now. Then I read a couple of enthusiastic reviews by a couple of unrelated people I trust and I thought "This is it. This is the time." Well, maybe I could have saved the time.
The book is not bad, mind you, but I found it waaaaay too long and boring. The build-up of the plot is very slow and some of the things still won't convince me, no matter how much I think about them. There's also so much taken directly from other novels (hello, "The turn of the screw") that we can hardly call it an innovative story. I don't know, maybe I expected too much from this novel, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's not bad, not good. Just average. But there are more than 500 pages to read and life isn't long enough for average books, in my opinion.
