Harry Potter agus an Órchloch

Amo molto i film tratti dalla saga di Harry Potter e solo ora (in tarda età) ho deciso di avventurami anche nella lettura dei romanzi.

La meraviglia di questo primo romanzo della saga, risiede proprio nella magia dell’inizio; qui infatti tutto comincia, tutto viene presentato, descritto e narrato per la prima volta e ciò cattura subito l’attenzione del lettore. A quel punto siete persi, tornare indietro non è più possibile e impariamo a conoscere Harry, la sorte della sua famiglia, l’odio di Voldemort nei suoi confronti e del perché una cicatrice a forma di saetta... e poi il binario 9 ¾ fino ad arrivare alla scuola di magia, Hogwarts.

Far worse than I remember. The plot is jumpy and the narration is surprisingly nondescript. If it weren’t for the mass appeal of magic and schooling, we would recognize Rowling for what she is: a dreadful writer.

It blows my mind that adults continue to read these novels, and then use Harry Potter to infantilize their world-view into simple paradigms of good versus evil. The franchise entertained millions of children a decade ago. But all stories end, and it’s time we grew up.

After watching the first four movies I finally decided to have a look at the book to see things at their source, so to say, and found it satisfying.
The first point I wish to stress is that the first movie is a more than adequate rendering of the book: some of the plot has been changed but the atmosphere is just the same. Where he movie clearly surpasses the book itself is the visualization: Ms Rowling has no outstanding talent for -or is just not interested in- the settings while the scenographers of the movie clearly have, plenty of... Hogwarts and the other minor locations, which are so very much alive and impressive in the movies, are rather dim in this first book.
Apart from this (a this that earned its author so many millions of pounds I cannot begin to think about) there is nothing outstanding in her book: the writing is neat, at times witty, the plot straightforward, characterization consistent, but there is no trace of genius in all these pages: we are not faced with a new Shakespeare nor with an irresistible entertainer: we have a clever story (clever, not honest: there are many cunning devices here) that flows unerringly to its end providing a fair amount of satisfaction.
An outright flaw is one I needed a little time to grasp: style inconsistency. It seems to me that Ms Rowling started writing with a children's story in mind but later her true inspiration, which is a much darker one, overtook her pen giving birth to gloomier paragraphs. I love dark fantasy, I really do, but this continuous shift between two different attitudes is not pleasing nor show a complete control of writing skills.

Dopo aver visto i primi quattro film ho finalmente deciso di dare un'occhiata al libro per vedere le cose alla loro fonte, per così dire, e l'ho trovato soddisfacente. Il primo punto che vorrei sottolineare è che il primo film è una resa più che adeguata del libro: parte della trama è stata cambiata, ma l'atmosfera è sempre la stessa. Dove il film supera chiaramente il libro stesso è la visualizzazione: la signora Rowling non ha un talento eccezionale per - o semplicemente non è interessata alle ambientazioni, mentre gli scenografi del film ne hanno chiaramente, in abbondanza. . . Hogwarts e le altre location minori, che sono così vive e impressionanti nei film, sono piuttosto fioche in questo primo libro.
Comunque a parte il fatto che ha fatto guadagnare all'autrice tanti milioni di sterline che non riesco a pensare, non c'è nulla di eccezionale nel suo libro: la scrittura è ordinata, a volte spiritosa, la trama lineare, la caratterizzazione coerente, ma non c'è traccia di genialità in tutte queste pagine: non ci troviamo di fronte a un nuovo Shakespeare né a un irresistibile intrattenitore: abbiamo una storia intelligente (intelligente, non onesta: ci sono molti espedienti astuti qui) che scorre inesorabilmente fino alla sua fine dando una discreta soddisfazione.
Un vero e proprio difetto è quello che ho avuto bisogno di un po' di tempo per capire: l'incoerenza stilistica. Mi sembra che la signora Rowling abbia iniziato a scrivere pensando a una storia per bambini, ma in seguito la sua vera ispirazione, che è molto più oscura, ha superato la sua penna dando vita a paragrafi più cupi. Amo la fantasia oscura, davvero, ma questo continuo spostamento tra due diversi atteggiamenti non è piacevole né mostra un completo controllo delle capacità di scrittura.
