I have read this novel several times over the years, in fact I've read all Tey's detective novels several times. This one takes place in a girl's college that trains what would today be called physiotherapists.
The Miss Pym of the title is a successful author, who accepts an invitation from the former Head Girl of her old school to give her students a talk. Miss Pym's visit, her then growing interest in the energetic and hardworking girls and subsequent involvement in their affairs make up the plot.
Miss Pym Disposes has the Tey hallmark of quirky characters - how could you not love the Nut Tart (a Brazilian girl who is a lovely dancer, has brains, and is going to marry an Englishman), Catherine Lux (a sardonic teacher who behaves cruelly to an admirer, a former matinée idol), or Doctor and Mrs Innes (the hardworking, sensible and kind parents of one of the students).
Inspector Grant is notably absent from Miss Pym Disposes, which does not prevent the police needing to be present in the book, following an accident in the gym. I don't think anyone will accuse me of being guilty of a spoiler if I suggest there is doubt over the accident theory ...
