How long is a moment ?
Virginia Woolf is able not only to describe the moment, but also to select and illustrate it to the reader in slow motion and radically transforming it to infinity.
In this novel the narration underlines different events that happen in the city of London at the same moment and that concern singular characters.
Parallel planes meet together and people are unsuspecting closed to each other.
This creates between them a link that builds an inextricable drawing on different planes of time.
In this case the extension of the moment also reaches the past which is in constant contact with the present, until all transitional scans are cancelled and we can establish a single place and time.
The descriptions obtain a new expressive dimension: a reality shown as an epiphany.
So we walk inside the rooms and different landscapes with Clarissa and Peter; we go through Septimus' visionary London, where we hear sounds and noises, where we feel special fragrances and everything finally is.
Septimus is considered Virginia Woolf's alter ego and through him she describes the madness caused by the devastating experience lived by young people during the First World War.
War is the perfect metaphor of human madness and the critical episodes Septimus lives occur when he thinks about those terrible years.
Suicide non premeditated, but induced, a passive wish not to die, but a wish of life subtracted from the power to the other.
To the other you give the power of death, but not the power of life.
Every relations Virginia Woolf creates are connected to Clarissa's party: here every character joins another.
And one of the most brilliant illumination of the novel is to show how you can enter in contact with other people without having known them or without having ever said a word to them.
The so bright final is the discovery of the shining simplicity of the existence, that surprising glimmer which sparkles in those who notice to be just awake, that lightning which recalls the immense and the intuition with only a flash.
"I will come," said Peter, but he sat on for a moment. What is
this terror? what is this ecstasy? he thought to himself. What is
it that fills me with extraordinary excitement?
It is Clarissa, he said.
For there she was.
