Sedaris always manages to make light of any situation, even the most embarrassing or scary ones. This collection starts slow, with a pretty weak story, but then gains pace as Sedaris tells us about his hitchhiking days, working in an unfriendly apple factory, meeting all sorts of bizarre and disturbing people. The two stories that close the volume - the bittersweet "Ashes", about the discovery of his mother's tumor and their last family trip, and the funny "Naked" detailing his week in a nudist camp - are excellent and would justify, alone, the price of the book.
