This is part of the Hermux Tantamoq series. Hermux is a mouse who lives as a timid and conscientious watchmaker but who gradually gets dragged into the most exciting adventures. Each book covers a complete adventure and each builds on the characters that we come to love.
Hermux over the course of the series becomes quite the intrepid adventurer with a growing passion for solving mysteries. There is also a sweet romantic interest that develops further in each subsequent book in the series.
There are many wonderful characters here, many of them mice but with all sorts of others as well: rats, badgers, bees, ladybugs, birds, etc. It is set in a fantasy world where mice are the average citizen but which hints at a history preceding the ascendancy of Mice and at other countries and cities beyond that of the Mice.
The books are each action-adventure oriented with quite a bit of suspense and even scary events. I would guess they are appropriate for adventure-loving children from nine years old upwards. The names of the characters are bewildering in their strangeness, for example the arch villain in the series is a ruthless female mouse with a truly astounding array of evil schemes, Tucka Mertslin.
The action and suspense are perfectly balanced with humour and a gentle narrative style. This series appears to get better as it goes along, too: I have read the first four books. As an adult I thoroughly enjoyed them - they are a quick read and something entirely new: it is always a pleasure to read something unique and inventive like the Hermux Tantamoq series. For a younger crowd than Harry Potter fans I suppose but no less well written and entertaining.
These hard-covers are very well made and sport beautiful art on the cover. Again, these books would make wonderful gifts for children - they will entertain, foster interest in reading, and are educational in that they are beautifully written in impeccable and stylish English....Continua
