amazing book. simply written, shocking, haunting.
one of the best novels I have read in the last decade.
not for the faint of heart.
and hilarious at times, too:
"She imagined sound waves pushing around the planet, dissipating into space, carrying the message from male humanity, the inevitable male wail: 'I can't bear people making demands on me!' She pictured Man, lying on a sofa, the back of his hand to his forehead. She pictured Woman laughing helplessly at the absurdity of it. How many men had uttered one or other version to her long before she had time to explain that she didn't want commitments, domesticity or a live-in companion?"
"There probably wasn't an hour in a day when she didn't think of Joshua who, she reminded herself fiercely time and again, almost certainly thought of her only minutes before he called. How many times in three years can you consider the nature of your feelings for someone? Countless, countless times, it appeared. No matter that there was never a satisfactory conclusion, or even much point in the query. She was clearly obsessed but that, she supposed, was what other people called love".
