Wonders and tragedies, joy and sorrow, sex and sacrifice, betrayal and forgiveness. Cat Valente weaves the story of four persons bound by fate, by loneliness and by the city of Palimpsest, setting, character and narrator, mater terribilis of war and love.
It's a book I initially struggled against; I loved the beautiful and evocative writing, but I didn't understand the appeal or obsession of the city, nor the characters. It was only as the layers were revealed and their motivations unveiled that I got caught in their quest, and struggle, and sacrifices, and in the end I came to love it, and love them.
And without Palimpsest we wouldn't have "The girl who circumnavigated Fairyland", so extra brownie points for that.
