A few months ago we read The Casebook of Carnacki Ghostfinder at bibliogoth which I had originally bought because Bill had read this novel by the same author and loved it. We found his copy while moving and I decided to read it next. It was FANTASTIC. It was so clearly where Lovecraft got inspiration, and also reminded me a little of Wells' science-fiction. It was spooky and creepy and just when I thought it couldn't get any better there was a whole new layer added to it that made it even more beautiful and tragic.
The only problem with it was the "sister" character, who was far less important than the dog, and seemed to serve no point at all. In fact for large portions of the book even her existence seemed to be forgotten.
But it was well written, it was much easier to visualise than the Ghostfinder book. Definitely one that I'd recommend.
If you can't find a copy it is available on gutenberg, http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/10002
