I liked this book a lot, because it is not entirely fantasy, nor cold essays about certain interesting facts of life. This book is like an hybrid between a tale-telling and a law essay. It has a lot of interesting pieces, such as the story of a girl that recovered from congenital blindness, but soon after that choose to remain blind because her suddenly aquired sense of sight had interferred with her artistic gifts. There is also the story of an elderly couple that have to face the end of life facts, and the story of a post-divorce romance. The style of this book is very interesting and I really liked the way the author introduces his ideas covered in some fictional-like conversation; that in the end doesn't look so fictional at all.
Three stories are among the best ever written by Barnes: "Complicity" (on the magic of falling in love); "Carcassonne" (where you can find also references to the Italian Risorgimento and Giuseppe Garibaldi (and his wife Anita); and, the most beautiful of all, "Pulse", on love (between man and wife, but also between son and mother), marriage, death.
