Holmes titled himself a "Consulting Detective". His powers of observation, his understanding of crime, and his insights into the criminal mind were brilliant. His knowledge of things not related to crime were extemely limited, except in opera and the violin.
Like many other authors famous for a single character, Arthur Conan Doyle attempted to "kill" Holmes. But the readers would not let this happen. Holmes eventually appeared in 56 short stories and 4 novels....Continua
The quality of the stories decays compared to "The adventures of Sherlock Holmes". The mysteries are worse built and the resolutions are less logical.
Apart from that, the last story comes with a too abrupt ending very little developed. Moriarty is very bad introduced and the final Holme's letter is a very clumsy narrative resource.
Definitely, the author was fed up of his character at this point of his life.

Well, I know it is very difficult to write detective stories which show all the evidence to reader, but still able to surprise us!
Well.... Sherlock Holems is still VERY GOOD!...Continua
Oh man, this has the most CLASSIC Holmes mysteries that I've read yet! I should have read Memoirs before I read Return; I got the Moriarti story backwards!
Holmes is at the top of his game in Memoirs and the chains of logic in which Doyle reveals the causes only after seeing the results first are delicious!...Continua
