The Shining

This is by far my favorite Stephen king novel. The suspense, drama, mystery its absolutely terrifying. To think that at anytime by having the shine you can see dead people and read thoughts at Danny Torrences age is shocking and scary. If you enjoyed the movie - the book needs to be considered as a separate form of expression. Many things in the book are more evil, darker, and haunting then the movie was able to show. While the movie is also a favorite - the book takes the cake.

"They watched until the car was out of sight, headed down the eastern slope. When it was gone, the three of them looked at each other for a silent, almost frightened moment. They were alone. Aspen leaves whirled and skittered in aimless packs across the lawn that was now neatly mowed and tended for no guest's eyes. There was no one to see the autumn leaves steal across the grass but the three of them. It gave Jack a curious shrinking feeling, as if his life force had dwindled to a mere spark while the hotel and the grounds had suddenly doubled in size and become sinister, dwarfing them with sullen, inanimate power."

Ero molto incerta se mettere 5 o "solo" 4 stelle. Ho scelto 5 perché se ci ho messo così tanto tempo a leggerlo è perché mi faceva troppa PAURA! Più volte ho dovuto interrompere perchè il disagio cresceva e cresceva, proprio come deve avvenire in un racconto horror, a partire da situazioni apparentemente banali che poi diventano sempre più soffocanti senza neanche che si riesca a capire che cosa ci fa paura, in realtà. La sequenza di Danny che va a giocare nel parco giochi per esempio è magistrale. Quindi sì, 5 stelline, assolutamente.

Certo, c'è una dose massiccia di sovrannaturale, che poi dà anche il titolo al libro e giustifica tutta la storia che si tinge di inverosimile per essere più terrorizzante che mai. Però quello che viene messo in scena, con giochi pirotecnici e grandi trovate horror, è una famiglia che va in pezzi, e non solo metaforicamente. Quanto il rancore inespresso, che rimane a covare sotto un'apparente normalità, può andare a fomentare rancori e sedimentarsi senza trovare sfogo se non in maniera violenta? Quante volte capita che in una famiglia per i propri errori, per i propri fallimenti personali non si trova altro capro espiatorio che negli altri membri (perché non hanno capito, perché non hanno adeguatamente sostenuto, perché non hanno saputo qual era la cosa giusta da fare...) Il rancore rimane a distillare vittimismo che può sfociare nella rabbia e nella violenza più sorda. Proprio laddove invece si dovrebbe trovare il maggior sostegno. Questo è davvero agghiacciante, molto più delle siepi che si trasformano in mostri o degli zombie che si mettono a girare per i corridoi di un vecchio albergo che ne ha viste di tutti i colori. Non potersi fidare più di colui che ti ha cullato, cresciuto, da chi si dovrebbe prendere cura di te deve essere una condizione terribile, Ancor più agghiacciante in quanto è una situazione che sembra darsi spesso anche nella realtà, non sono nelle pagine di un maestro del terrore.
