This is the debut novel that shot Sarah Waters to fame, but is definitely not my favourite. It's more like an excuse for Waters to realise some sort of pornographic dream. There is graphic and frequent portrayal of lesbian sex, most of the time for no reason.

Addictive, I couldn't put it down! Definitely recommended if you are into Victorian/Gothic novels, gender issues, fascinating/picaresque plots. This novel provides good, easy reading, so that you really take to Nancy King's adventures.
