The noted biographer creates a sympathetic portrayal of a man who
has not always emerged unscathed from other biographies, to say the least. This new work remains positive in approach to its subject, as he transitioned from law to academics to politics. Better than this author's more recent biographies, but nothing can touch the brilliance of his first biography, Max Perkins: Editor of Genius. This Wilson biography stands out for its respect for its subject, even if the writing style is merely workmanlike.
