This expanded version is real good. It gives a much needed elaboration and development of the characters and events in the movie. Prologue alone tipped me off-balance. I can't help wondering if I was reading the wrong book. Besides, I deeply believe Ackbar was wasted in the movie. This book brought him back his credits. Besides, the back story of Snoke, while limited, gave more insight than in the movie. His assessment of Ben/Ren and Rey also explained his behaviour and scheme. Last but not least, Rey's understanding of the force also explained why she did not kill Ren after the kasper exploded.
