Description
The story of the Heart of the Antarctic is that of Shackleton's first polar expedition, part of his never-ending quest to reach the South Pole. In 1906 he came within ninety-seven miles of his goal - agonisingly close. Both appalling weather and the necessity of reaching his ship before it had to flee the advancing ice pack forced him to turn back and abandon the expedition. The result was a breathtaking race against time. On the expedition was Douglas Mawson, whose Home of the Blizzard is published by Birlinn.
